Defining cross-platform gameplay

We can’t really ask a question like, ‘Is Mortal Kombat 11 cross-platform?’ without defining what we mean. Simply put, cross-platform gaming refers to you being able to play the same game with other players regardless of what platform or device you are playing from.

The Genshin Impact crossplay facilities provide a good example of this, a trend becoming much more commonplace across the gaming industry. It can lag behind in fighting games though, especially with an older title like Mortal Kombat 11. Check out our guide that answers the question, ‘What is crossplay?’ if you need further clarification.

Is Mortal Kombat 11 cross-platform?

OK now that we’ve clarified the cross-platform meaning, we’re in a good place to see what the Mortal Kombat 11 crossplay options are. Well, there’s a cool feature built into the game called Krossplay that offers a fair degree of crossplay depending on what platform you’re playing from.

Simply put, you can enjoy Online Kasual game modes if you’re playing from a console. This means that gamers with a PS5, PS5, Xbox Series S|X, or Xbox One can add themselves to the same matchmaking pool.

In addition to this, this feature also allows Xbox console gamers and those playing from a PC to take part in the same Mortal Kombat 11 fights. It’s not the perfect system, but it shows that NetherRealm Studios understands the demand for cross-platform gaming and we hope to see further updates to Krossplay soon!

How to Launch Crossplay

Like all of the best crossplay games, Mortal Kombat 11 makes playing against gamers on other platforms fairly easy. This is because you just have to have the Krossplay feature toggled on to play against those from a different kind of console. The Krossplay icon can be found in the main Online menu in-game under the Kasual modes section in the top-right of the screen.

From here, you can go to the Krossplay Online Rooms, where you can meet up with friends and arrange showdowns against others. All of which should make for some awesome fighting entertainment, regardless of what console you’re using!

The latest game in the series, Mortal Kombat 1, doesn’t have crossplay for some reason. It’s great that we can still jump into cross-platform matches on 11 though.

Mortal Kombat 11 cross-progression explained

While the Mortal Kombat 11 crossplay options are pretty impressive, the game’s cross-progression options have yet to catch up. Cross-progression refers to the ability to have your game saves update the next time you play, regardless of whether you switch between different devices.

Sadly, the Mortal Kombat 11 cross-progression facilities only saves game progress exclusive to the family of gaming platforms you use. However, it’s worth noting that Mortal Kombat 11 cross-progression works if you’re switching between something like a PS4 and PS5, and an Xbox One and Xbox X|S.

So if you were to play the game on PS4 and switch to Xbox One, you’d lose all of your rank and other progression. This is similar to other fighting games with a lack of cross-progression like Street Fighter 6.

Will Krossplay Get Any Upgrades?

By now, you’ll have a good grounding in the Krossplay feature of Mortal Kombat 11 and will know that it offers you a reasonable amount of flexibility in how you play.

However, it’s not a perfect cross-platform system yet. NetherRealm Studios has moved onto Mortal Kombat 1 now. It’s unlikely 11 will get any more updates, unfortunately. Mortal Kombat 1 crossplay isn’t active yet, but it could get updated eventually to bring it in line with the crossplay for 11.
