What does Pokémon 591 meme mean?

When you look up Pokémon 591, it comes up with a certain cute Pokémon. Each one has a specific number tied to it, referencing its place in the Pokédex. For example, Pokémon 1 is Bulbasaur, Pokémon 330 is Flygon, number 612 is Haxorus and so on and so forth. The 591st Pokémon is Amoonguss, the evolution of Foongus. That certainly seems innocuous enough and for a very long time, it was.

Amonguss didn’t become a meme until at least 2018, when a new game came out called Among Us. The game didn’t really blow up until 2025 and 2021, so the Pokémon was still safe arguably even until then. However, once it became popular, the Pokémon 591 meme was born.

It should be noted that Amoonguss was made long before the game came out. The Pokémon hails from Generation V, so it was created and released to the public in 2010. That was almost a decade before Among Us even hit consoles. This is a truly inadvertent and ironic coincidence. Had Amoonguss hailed from Generation VIII (Sword and Shield) or IX (Scarlet and Violet), then they might have been playing the meme, but they couldn’t have known back in 2010.

Among Us became a meme in its own right, which is why the Pokémon 591 meme took off like it did. Everything about the game, from the avatars to the music, has become a meme in today’s culture. Pokémon was just caught in the crossfire.

What to know about Pokémon #591, Amoonguss

Amoonguss is the 591st Pokémon to ever come out. It is a mushroom-like Pokémon that evolves from a smaller mushroom-like Pokémon. It has three bulbs, one for a “head” and the other two serve as its “arms”. They are each split into two sections with a circle in the middle. One section is white and the other is red. On the shiny version, the red color is switched out for purple.

It is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon that was first introduced in Generation V that evolves from Foongus starting at level 39. It appears to be distantly related to the Paradox Pokémon Brute Bonnet.

According to Bulbapedia, Amoonguss is a carnivore. It uses the patterns on its arms to lure in its prey, usually without a whole lot of success. It also blows poisonous spores at its opponents. These will grow into mushrooms wherever they land if they are not washed off immediately. The Pokémon doesn’t move around very much. It prefers to stand near any dropped Pokéballs. It prefers to stay in damp places (fitting with the mushroom theme), and can be found mainly in long grass with only their mushroom cap head sticking out. They prefer to be close to water as well.
